The Battlehawks will debut a new-look offense in their third season under the direction of the only head coach in franchise history, Anthony Becht, and those changes will have to do with much more than the departure of quarterback A.J. McCarron.
While there will be a measure of continuity in the offense, there will also be new offensive leadership under center as well as on the sideline with changes at multiple levels of the coaching staff for a team that came within 10 points of advancing to and hosting the UFL championship game at The Dome at America鈥檚 Center.
Despite those changes, two of the three quarterbacks on his roster being new to the team and a relatively short run up to the first game March 28, Becht sounded poised and anxious to attack this revamp of an offense that posted the second-highest scoring average (26 points per game) in the UFL last season and averaged 25.4 ppg the past two seasons.

Clearly, this is a man who realizes the one constant in life is change. He鈥檚 also planning to make change benefit his team.
鈥淚 think for us it鈥檚 how do we raise the level of execution for our players,鈥 Becht said of the offensive changes when he addressed reporters via a zoom call Friday on the verge of the start of training camp in Arlington, Texas. 鈥淚s it something the way we鈥檙e teaching it? Is it something the way we鈥檙e saying it? We鈥檙e so close on a lot of certain plays that we felt like we left a lot on the field, and we had an ultra-successful season last year and the year before.

Battlehawks head coach Anthony Becht waits in the tunnel before leading his team to the field to play the San Antonio Brahmas on Sunday, June 9, 2024, at The Dome at America鈥檚 Center.
鈥淪o, really, it鈥檚 just taking a deep dive and saying how can we make this better? How do we get it so our players can learn it quickly and go out and play fast. I think that鈥檚 the biggest thing for the fans. Nothing is going to change. We鈥檙e going to try and score as many points as possible. We鈥檙e going to be explosive.鈥
In November, the team released McCarron, a move that left the former University of Alabama national championship signal caller publicly embittered. That meant for the first time in two seasons, the team would turn over the offense to a new starting quarterback.
In recent weeks, the Battlehawks announced significant changes to the offensive coaching staff. That included the departure of offensive coordinator and play-caller Bruce Gradkowski for an offensive assistant position with the Detroit Lions of the NFL, and the addition of another former NFL players Seneca Wallace (quarterbacks coach) and Marc Colombo (offensive line coach).
Wide receivers coach Phil McGeoghan added the title of offensive coordinator and has taken on play-calling duties.
Becht said all of the Battlehawks players were present and accounted for at camp as of Friday morning, and that he鈥檇 seen an interacted with all of them. coupled with each of the league鈥檚 24 quarterbacks skipping a league-organized QB-only minicamp last week.
The Battlehawks quarterback competition will include returner Manny Wilkins, former University of Hawaii and San Jose State quarterback Chevan Cordeiro and former TCU standout and 2022 Heisman Trophy runner-up Max Duggan.
鈥淎.J. did a spectacular job for us the last two seasons,鈥 Becht said. 鈥淚 don鈥檛 want to take away or minimize anything he鈥檚 done. He was able to come in a really help a play-caller like Bruce advance, our team as well. We just feel like now in Year 3, we have a good grasp of this. We hired Seneca Wallace, obviously an incredible dual-threat quarterback. That鈥檚 kind of the skillset of all of our quarterbacks now. I promised those guys that I would get them a guy that would really help them succeed at that level.
鈥淭hen, of course, with the system that we鈥檙e implementing. How can we get these guys up to speed? I just trust my staff. I believe that the players will be able to understand and follow through.鈥
Wallace, who spent eight seasons in the NFL as a quarterback, set Iowa State records for total offense as a dual-threat quarterback in 2001 and 2002.
The Battlehawks return the second-leading rusher in the UFL in Jacob Saylors (51.2 yards per game) and the leader in total yards per game in wide receiver Hakeem Butler. Six new wide receivers will be with the club to start camp.
Becht expects McGeorghan, Wallace and Colombo will each put new touches into the offense this season. Becht and McGeoghan also alluded to simplifications with the offensive terminology that they hoped will make the offense more 鈥渦ser-friendly.鈥
McGeoghan, who served as assistant head coach/wide receivers coach at the University of Colorado in 2022, has spent stints coaching with the Los Angeles Chargers, Buffalo Bills and Miami Dolphins as well as in college football.
鈥淚t will definitely be different,鈥 McGeoghan said of the offense. 鈥淭here鈥檚 definitely going to be some differentiated points of emphasis within the offense because your roster changes. 鈥 I philosophically believe in looking at your personnel over the first week. You鈥檒l have a whole offensive system in, but then you really pair it down based on what the skillsets are of your players. Then, this is a player-driven enterprise.鈥
The Battlehawks won鈥檛 just be running it back with a new quarterback this season. They鈥檙e approaching this as though their entering a new stage of their offense.
If they take a step backward, then the door will be open for side-eyes and second guesses.
