Victor Scott II sprints in Mach 2. He can scramble up the parameters of a tightly played baseball game with baserunning speed that is just not normal. Like, there鈥檚 fast, and then there鈥檚 this. To keep things a level playing field 鈥� and it sure looks like Scott is running downhill down there 鈥� perhaps the umpires could start giving him speeding tickets.

And on a May 2025 day at Busch Stadium, he transported onlookers to an October 1946 afternoon, across town, at the corner of Grand and Dodier.

Cardinals lifers know it was Game 7 of the World Series at Sportsman鈥檚 Park when Enos 鈥淐ountry鈥� Slaughter ran the famous 鈥淢ad Dash鈥� (in St. 香港三级片, it gets a capital M and capital D).

Cards-Red Sox. Bottom of the eighth. Tied at three. Slaughter was on first base. Two outs. Harry Walker lined a base hit to left-center.

And Slaughter ... just ... kept ... running.

Already stealing on the play, Country scampered to third and headed home in time to beat the throw. The Cards took a 4-3 lead and won the World Series in the ninth.

Well, in Wednesday鈥檚 5-0 win 鈥� which was St. 香港三级片鈥� fifth win in a row, to get the Birds back to .500 鈥� Scott started stealing second on a Lars Nootbaar lined single to right-center.

It was a scoreless game at the time. And as Scott scooted to third, he spotted third base coach Ron 鈥淧op鈥� Warner.

鈥淚 had my back to the ball at that point, so I was just reading Pop,鈥� Scott said. 鈥淎nd as soon as I saw him waving me home, that鈥檚 when I just turned into another gear.鈥�

He has even another gear?

Scott scurried home 鈥� diving head-first 鈥� to beat the throw and the tag. It was exhilarating.

鈥淚 mean, everybody just wants him to hit a triple so they can watch him run,鈥� teammate Masyn Winn said. 鈥淪o to watch him go first to home, it鈥檚 unbelievable.鈥�

Nootbaar, like 1946 Cardinal Harry Walker, advanced to second on the throw home. So yeah, Scott scored from first on a single. He was clocked at 9.23 seconds from first base to home plate 鈥� that is particularly fast.

鈥淭hat鈥檚 wild 鈥� I mean, not many can do that,鈥� said Cards manager Oliver Marmol, who later smiled at the comment that Victor on first base is, basically, in scoring position. 鈥淗is speed is fun watch. I didn鈥檛 think he was going to score on that one. Good send by Pop. incredible speed right there. He continues to show why, why he belongs here.鈥�

On the television broadcast, former Cardinal Scott Terry happened to be in the booth that third inning. Terry runs the Cardinals kids clinics, so after the excitement of Scott scoring, Brad Thompson had to ask:

鈥淪o are you teaching baserunning like that?鈥�

鈥淲e teach the baserunning,鈥� Terry deadpanned, 鈥渂ut we can鈥檛 give you that speed.鈥�

Sure enough, Wednesday was a history lesson. Even for the man who, essentially, taught it.

I didn鈥檛 expect Scott, 24, to know about a play or player from 79 years ago. In the Cardinals clubhouse, there are felt banners with each retired number. So I showed Scott the one with SLAUGHTER 9 and told the speedster about the original play.

鈥淭he Mad Dash!鈥� Scott said joyfully.

If last year was the introduction of Winn鈥檚 awesomeness to Cardinal Nation, this year is that for Scott. No, fans are not coming to the ballpark as much this season, and understandably so. The Cards missed the playoffs in 2023 and missed the playoffs in 2024 and then, as a team in transition, didn鈥檛 sign any hitters or starting pitchers this offseason. But Victor Scott II is just a pleasure to watch. A treasure unearthed by the Cardinals scouts and coaches. The guy can fly.

In fact ...

Later in the game, Scott scored from first again! This time in was on a ground-ball double 鈥� but it was to the left fielder.

鈥淭hat was crazy,鈥� Scott said. 鈥淚 think that鈥檚 the first time I鈥檝e ever scored from first twice in the game. So that was insane.鈥�

Scott has 11 stolen bases, the fourth-highest total in baseball. He鈥檚 only been caught stealing once. So is he the fastest man in Major League Baseball? He鈥檚 at least in the conversation. Per Baseball Savant, he averages 3.72 seconds on his 90-foot sprint speed 鈥� second-fastest in baseball, only behind Tampa Bay youngster Chandler Simpson. And his sprint speed (feet per second) is 30.1. Only two players have clocked faster 鈥� Byron Buxton and Bobby Witt Jr. 鈥� and that鈥檚 only 30.2.

鈥淵ou don鈥檛 get anybody faster than him,鈥� teammate Jordan Walker said of Scott. 鈥淚 mean, he might be the fastest baseball player I鈥檝e ever seen in person, I know, but I鈥檝e played against Elly (de la Cruz of the Reds), but I think Vic鈥檚 got him.鈥�

Asked about bringing a fear factor to opposing pitchers and players, Scott said: 鈥淚 can kind of sense it a little bit just already with how many times I鈥檓 getting side-stepped and pitchouts and all that, all the sorts. I鈥檓 trying to try and get some (stolen bases), trying to get myself in scoring position but definitely got to be smart with that. ... I have more of a known identity of being a base dealer and a base threat (than last year). So that鈥檚 kind of where my confidence is being played into there.鈥�

And so, while this is the summer of the Cardinals鈥� 鈥渢ransition,鈥� this could be the summer of Mad Dashes.
