Too much violence, she says. But I鈥檝e been watching them since I was a kid. It started with 鈥淎dam-12,鈥� then 鈥淏arney Miller,鈥� 鈥淪tarsky and Hutch,鈥� 鈥淗awaii Five-O鈥� (the old one and the recently canceled one), 鈥淐HIPS,鈥� 鈥淐olumbo,鈥� 鈥淗ill Street Blues,鈥� 鈥淟aw and Order鈥� and my new favorite series: 鈥淣CIS.鈥�

There is almost always a scene in one of these shows where somebody is shot, and a police officer falls to a knee to provide first aid, then clicks the mic on his or her radio and dramatically calls for backup. Were such a show filmed in St. 香港三级片, the scene wouldn鈥檛 work, at least if the scene was on the MetroLink transit system. The police officer wouldn鈥檛 have enough free hands to call in on the various radios and cellphones needed to reach all the agencies that police the system. I first wrote about this problem in my 2017 series of columns called 鈥淐aught on Camera鈥� about St. 香港三级片 County police officers who were supposed to be policing the transit system but were instead caught placing tape over security cameras and taking naps.

One of the most confounding elements of that story was the fact that the various law enforcement agencies policing MetroLink 鈥� the Metro public safety and security teams, the St. 香港三级片 County Police Department, the St. 香港三级片 Metropolitan Police Department and the St. Clair County Sheriff鈥檚 Department 鈥� were not communicating on the same radio frequencies. For a while, they had been, but then the city and county, as they often do, went their own way.

The folks at the transit system warned that this would be a problem.

鈥淎s we previously discussed I still have grave concerns over this change and do not think it is in the best interests of overall public safety,鈥� former Metro head of public safety Richard Zott wrote to St. 香港三级片 County police Capt. Scott Melies in a November 2016 email. 鈥淪ometime I would like to further discuss how we will communicate in a timely fashion.鈥�

Sometime never came.

A lot of what was going on was politics, not public safety. Zott and his boss, then-Bi-State CEO John Nations, were pursuing the possibility of having a dedicated transit police department, like most of the larger systems across the country. A federally mandated audit of the system had suggested that as the best course of action. St. 香港三级片 County Executive Steve Stenger 鈥� who would later be sent to federal prison 鈥� objected to that course of action, canceled Metro鈥檚 contract, and tried to blame the transit system鈥檚 problems on Nations and Zott, when he and his police chief were responsible for much of the mess.

Nations and Zott are long gone, victims of Stenger鈥檚 brand of politics before the rest of St. 香港三级片 caught on to his corruption. Metro has spent millions of dollars on a new consultant telling it new things, and, according to my colleague Jacob Barker鈥檚 report on Sunday, the folks at Metro think things are headed in a better direction, public safety-wise.

But the hodgepodge of multiple law enforcement agencies that together take responsibility for public safety on the transit system 鈥� which now might include even more police agencies from municipalities offering up officers to work off-duty riding the trains and policing the transit platforms 鈥� still can鈥檛 communicate on one radio channel.

Frankly, I always thought Nations and Zott got a raw deal. Their idea for a unified transit police system made sense. 鈥淪erious consideration should be given by BSD to abandoning the contracted law enforcement model,鈥� wrote the consultants who conducted the annual threat and vulnerability assessment audit required by federal law. I wrote about that report in 2019. Metro went the other way.

So be it. At least these days, they鈥檙e admitting that the communication problem isn鈥檛 a technology issue, as county police falsely claimed when I first wrote about it. It鈥檚 politics, the same old politics of division that stops too many good ideas from being carried out in the St. 香港三级片 region.

鈥淭his is something that we will definitely need political support for,鈥� Kevin Scott, the new Metro director of transit security, told Barker. 鈥淚t鈥檚 about relationship building and understanding how this benefits the system. The system cannot be treated as three different systems. It has to be treated as one fluid system.鈥�

Scott鈥檚 solution sounds a lot like the one his predecessor, Zott, proposed. Four years after this problem entered the public fray, the disparate agencies that police the St. 香港三级片 transit system still can鈥檛 do that most simple of cop things, make a call on the radio 鈥� one radio 鈥� and make sure that all the right people hear it. Well, they can, but they won鈥檛.

The folks at MetroLink say things are looking up, and I hope they鈥檙e right. But is it too much to ask to fix the one thing that everybody agrees is broken?
