ST. LOUIS 鈥 The tornado was barreling straight for Crossroads College Prep as one class took the AP Psychology exam in a basement classroom.
Suddenly, more than 100 other students and staff members joined them on the lowest floor of the private school in the DeBaliviere Place neighborhood.
The lights flickered then went out. Kids said their ears were popping. They had no idea what they would face when they came back upstairs.
鈥淚t went right over us,鈥 said Mark Norwood, the co-head of school. 鈥淓veryone did so well. There鈥檚 a reason we do those drills.鈥
After spending time in the cafeteria waiting for parents to navigate their way to pick up kids, staff assessed the damage. There were bricks on the roof and lawn of the school that didn鈥檛 match the color of any buildings within view. Slate and insulation were tossed everywhere. But somehow, the Crossroads campus seemed relatively unscathed.

In the days that followed the tornado, students took classes online and more damage became apparent. About 50% to 75% of the school鈥檚 roof will have to be replaced. When it rained again, 15 to 20 new leaks sprung up. The fence around the parking lot was blown over.
And then, there was the question of graduation. The high school seniors had already missed their eighth grade camping trip because of pandemic shutdowns. The ceremony was set for Sunday, when the power at the school was still out.
Staff and community members scrambled to move the graduation. Urban Chestnut Brewing Company donated their beer garden space in the Midtown neighborhood for the ceremony. Personal Touches by Jeanetta, a St. 香港三级片 event company, moved the chairs, stage and risers to the brewery. And the graduation went off as scheduled.
鈥淵ou don鈥檛 normally have graduation in a beer garden, but it鈥檚 not a normal time,鈥 Norwood said.
