Officer Molly Muennich and two other officers were shot about 11 p.m. Saturday when they checked on a report of a man looking in windows of a home on Potomac Drive.

鈥淲e鈥檙e thankful and prayerful that things are looking positive,鈥� Mayor Mark Kupsky said. 鈥淭he community has been so supportive for all of our officers.鈥�

Officer Herminio Raimundi was shot in the arm. Officer Andrew Ward was shot in the chest, police said, but his protective vest stopped the bullet. Raimundi and Ward have been released from the hospital.

The mayor, police chief and others kept vigil at the hospital overnight Saturday. Muennich remained in critical condition Monday.

The St. Clair County state鈥檚 attorney filed charges Monday against Elijah Thompson, a 22-year-old man from Belleville. He is charged with four counts of attempted murder, three counts of aggravated battery and resisting arrest.

Thompson is being held at the St. Clair County Jail.

The charging documents identify the three officers and their injuries. Prosecutors said Thompson fired a Taurus GC3 9 mm handgun at police.

Prosecutors said Thompson fired in the direction of a fourth officer, Jonathan Henne, but did not hit him.

Fairview Heights has 47 police officers. Five of them, including a sergeant, were working the same shift Saturday night when they went to check on the prowler.

The officers were dispatched at 9:44 p.m. Saturday to Potomac Drive to investigate a suspected prowler. When officers arrived, they found 鈥渁 possible domestic situation,鈥� according to a police statement. They confronted the suspicious man and he opened fire on the officers, hitting three of them.

Muennich has been a Fairview Heights police officer since May 2023. In February, Muennich was awarded the Chief鈥檚 Coin of Excellence in Fairview Heights for volunteering her time to assist Illini students with Girls on the Run. In announcing the award, the city said her dedication to the program and 鈥渃ommitment to supporting the girls is a testament to her incredible character.鈥�
